The plastic film used in the packaging for our Vitalite Dairy Free alternative to cheese is made up of different layers. This ensures that the product doesn’t become contaminated before use, has an acceptable best before date and stays fresher for longer. Ultimately, this all helps to reduce food waste. However, these layers do mean that the plastic we use in our film is not currently recyclable and unfortunately there are no alternatives available that would deliver the same levels of food protection, quality & safety.

Our Research & Development teams are working hard to develop a new solution and we have an ambition to make all Vitalite packaging recyclable by 2022. In the meantime, we have teamed up with TerraCycle®.

TerraCycle® is a recycling company renowned for finding ways to recycle even the most difficult materials. They have come up with a great solution to recycle our packaging (and any other flexible packaging for that matter!)

Vitalite & TerraCycle® FAQs

Who are TerraCycle®?
TerraCycle® is a recycling company which find ways of recycling even the most difficult to recycle materials!
Why has Vitalite partnered with TerraCycle®?
Vitalite is committed to looking after the planet. We’re trying to reduce the impact our packaging has on the environment and we want to make it easier for you to recycle flexible packaging. We’ve partnered with experts TerraCycle® to offer a simple and free recycling solution while we work towards our goal of developing packaging which is 100% recyclable by 2022.
What can I recycle?
You can recycle ANY flexible plastic cheese packaging from ANY brand or supermarket, not just the packaging for Vitalite Dairy Free alternative to cheese.
What happens to the recycled packaging?

Once collected, your empty flexible plastic cheese packaging is separated by polymer type and cleaned. The material is then turned into plastic pellets to make new recycled products such as table tennis tables, watering cans or picnic benches. Click here to learn more about the recycling process on the TerraCycle® website.

Where can I find a TerraCycle® public drop-off location?
Use our map function above to find your nearest public drop-off location.
What if I don’t have a TerraCycle® public drop-off location nearby?

You have the opportunity to set one up in a convenient location and collect on behalf of your community as a public drop-off location administrator. Simply follow the steps below:

  1. Go to the TerraCycle® UK website: www.terracycle.com/en-GB
  2. Create a TerraCycle® account
  3. Find a public place to host your collection (with prior consent from the person responsible)
  4. Request to join the programme as a public drop-off location administrator by filling out the online form found here in the ‘How it works’ section on the Cheese Packaging Recycling Programme page.

If this is not possible, we recommend you save up your flexible plastic cheese packaging until you travel to an area that does have a public drop-off location.
